Statistically Strong in Hong Kong
The World Statistics Congress represents an opportunity for those in the statistics community to gather together to discuss and explore the advances made in their field over the previous year. Each year, the Congress selects a theme for the conference to focus on. This year the theme was "Youth" and the conference was offering a number of different problems and perspectives on youth culture and statistics, including a competition for maths students worldwide which attracted more than 7,200 people from 117 countries this year.
The Irish Central Statistics Office runs an annual poster competition called the John Hooper Medal for Statistics from which the entrants into the international competition were put forward, and the fact that two groups from this competition won on the world stage is truly remarkable. Aoife Troxel and Sive Neary from Dominican College, Taylor’s Hill in Galway were placed second in the world in the senior category with while Mary Aherne, Zoe Barry, Lucy Ward from Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton, Co Limerick was placed third in the world in the Junior category. All of us at Maths Week Ireland would like to congratulate these exceptional young people.
