This lecture aims to show how everyone can open their ‘Maths Eyes’ to explore the mathematics in the 'real world'.  Examples of linear, quadratic and other patterns in motion, fountains, forensic science, fitness testing and the environment will be considered.

This lecture aims to show how everyone can open their ‘Maths Eyes’ to explore the mathematics in the 'real world'.  Examples of linear, quadratic and other patterns in motion, fountains, forensic science, fitness testing and the environment will be considered.  There will also be examples from the Bioengineering Technology Centre (BTC) in IT Tallaght which will show how mathematics is used in spinal surgery research. The audience will also be  shown how they can return to their own schools, homes and communities with their ‘Maths Eyes’ open and then enter two Maths Week competitions.
