A new generation of wide field telescopes have revolutionised the way we observe the transient and dynamic sky. Rapid computer processing of digital images allows moving objects, variable stars and all sorts of transients to be discovered within minutes. There are many international projects to survey the sky and open up time critical astronomy in new ways.

The speaker will review some recent discoveries in this field, particularly the new class of "super luminous" supernovae which are a newly discovered rare class of exploding stars. They are 100 times brighter than normal supernovae and their origins are not full understood.

Prof. Smartt is Director of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's. He holds a prestigious European Research Council Advanced grant for work on superluminous supernova and is the leader of Europe's premier supernova survey (called PESSTO). He is author of over 180 science publications and has written popular articles for Nature and Sky at Night Magazines. He previously worked at the Isaac Newton Group of telescopes in La Palma and at the University of Cambridge. He was appointed to Professor of Astrophysics at Queen's in 2007.
